A new study is being conducted regarding the effects of vapes on smokers who are not planning to quit smoking cigarettes or smoking. The study follows 1660 smokers who had no intention of quitting and had not ever tried electronic cigarettes. Over the course of five years, researchers discovered that those who began vaping regularly are eight times more likely to quit smoking cigarettes than those who didn't.
The study's authors noted that the majority of studies on smoking cigarettes and vaping tend to focus on smokers who are already interested in quitting smoking. The studies don't include smokers who weren't interested in stopping. Researchers conducted the study to study the effects electronic cigarettes have on all smokers, not only those included in the current studies.
While it is possible that this was not intentional, however, the majority of users who were surveyed in the study were large smokers. Around 90% of the participants consumed more than 10 cigarettes a day. Just over half of the participants smoked one pack or more a day.
After participants were evaluated and then deemed eligible for the program, three factors were to be measured in follow-up questionnaires: their usage of electronic cigarettes, if they were still smoking cigarettes regularly, and whether they smoked cigarettes in any way.
Although the research is optimistic, however, it's an investigation that shows that there is a correlation and not causation.
The study notes that there could be specific factors that made certain individuals inclined to give up smoking, and the motivation to stop smoking cigarettes could alter as time passes. Furthermore, the vape options accessible to the general public have seen a significant change in the course of the research. I hope that more research comes out to examine the effects of electronic cigarettes.
